World Heritage in Pécs | Cella Septichora Visitor Center Discover the secrets of the 1600-year-old painted early Christian burial chambers with the help of a guide! In the heart of downtown Pécs, visitors arrive at an ancient world — Sopianae, Pécs’s Roman-era predecessor — at the World Heritage sites. Here lie the 4th-century early Christian tombs and burial chambers, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000 and also recognized as a Hungarian cultural treasure (Hungarikum). The dozen underground burial chambers of the early Christian monuments have rested beneath the surface for more than 1600 years. Visitors can explore this uniquely special underground world, wandering among burial chambers and monuments of varied floor plans. Some of these chambers are painted, with interiors decorated with biblical scenes and early Christian symbols, further enhancing their uniqueness and universal cultural value. Departure: Cella Septichora Visitor Center, Szent István Square, Pécs Guided tours are available for ticket holders at HUF 1,400 per person. Participation in the guided tour requires a valid ticket; no advance registration is needed.
